In Lukaawa village, the work of VHTs (Village Health Teams) has had a positive impact on the community members. The photograph shows a mother with her twins at home. They were screened with severe body wasting, under weight and growth retardation. They were taken for rehabilitation and treatment at Kitovu hospital. On a sad note, the family did not have a pit latrine and the hygiene and sanitation conditions were in a sorry state and diarrhea cases were very frequent. We discussed with the VHTs on how to intervene to help create an improvement. To date, the home has a constructed latrine; the children have improved and are able to walk. Home hygiene and sanitary practices have improved significantly.
The VHT structure can be very effective in helping to improve health Standards in the communities once adequately supported.
